Stonehouse Home Guard
This photograph was taken by Tom Round Smith on the High Street/Gloucester Road Railway bridge with the Regal Cinema in background.
Soldiers in the photo from left to right are - Arnold Annis who became an estate agent in Stroud, Charlie Carter, Market gardener, ? Jones who lived at the bottom of Burdett Road and Geoffrey Round Smith, Tom's twin brother.
It must have been taken pre-mid-1942 since that's when Tom went into the Royal Navy.
This photo shows members of Stonehouse Home Guard Platoon, 'E' Company, 8th Gloucestershire
Regiment, at rifle practice. It was taken on a Sunday morning at Stonehouse Brick
& Tile Co's brickworks (chimney in background). The Home Guard are in a disused section
of a clay pit.
The photo was also taken by Tom Round Smith who was a member of the
Platoon until he was called up (apparently this was when young men reached 17 or
18 years old). Tom went into the Royal Navy in mid 1942 - so this photo was taken
early in WWII.
